Thieves Continue to Target Optometry Practices Across the Las Vegas Valley
A suspected theft ring is targeting optometric practices across the Las Vegas Valley. Reports of theft at several optometry offices began in February and have continued, with the most recent reported theft occurring on Tuesday, May 21, in Summerlin.
Las Vegas Metro Police, out of the Enterprise Command, are working on the cases and are confident this ring is the same group that has hit several optometry offices across the valley.
We know of at least 12 offices where thieves have tried to steal high-end eyewear. All practices report the same woman coming in during business hours to steal or to case the business to burglarize later.
What we know
A woman, who is not a patient, comes into the office to schedule an appointment for her son, John Mayweather and gives his date of birth as April 1 (April Fools Day). She provided a fake address and said she wanted to browse for glasses for her son (who, in at least three cases, was not with her). The woman will take a long time, so opticians may stop working with or watching her. She will then put frames in the front pocket of the hoodie she likes to wear. In one theft, she slipped frames from a drawer into the spot where she swiped the glasses she stole so the office wouldn't notice the missing frames. She likes to wear frames with demo lenses to the office. During one theft, she wore Michael Kors frames with demo lenses.
The suspect, pictured below, is a black woman approximately 50 years old who wore a purple hoodie, green cargo pants, demo frames during two thefts, and a black zippered sweatshirt in another robbery.
She drives a black Ford Mustang with temporary tags (pictured below).
The suspect does not work alone
According to reports from the practices hit, the female suspect does not work alone.
During the theft at a practice in Spring Valley on Monday, May 13, a male suspect accompanied the female suspect. The male suspect told a practice employee he was carrying a gun and warned the employee not to interfere or he would shoot.
In a robbery that occurred on Saturday, May 4, the female suspect came into the practice with another woman. The duo entered the practice near closing time when the suspect distracted staff with the appointment scheme while the other woman stole Gucci sunglasses.
The Saturday prior, she entered another optometry practice alone and asked to schedule but didn't steal any eyewear. Instead, she was casing the business. That practice was burgled at 1:00 AM on Sunday by a man believed to be another partner in the ring. The suspected burglar, pictured below, is described as a heavy-set Hispanic male. He smashed through the glass front door to gain entry and stole $10,000 worth of sunglasses in about two minutes.
The suspect's temporary tag/license plate has been put into Metro's license plate reader system to alert them to pull her over.
What to do if the suspects enter your office
If the suspects enter your office, keep staff focused.
- Call the police immediately.
- Stay vigilant, as we know she doesn't work alone.
- Don't confront her or her accomplice(s); wait for the police.
- If you have video cameras, please share images with the police in case she leaves before they arrive.
What to do if this group has already hit your office
File a police report.
- You have a year to file a report from the date of theft/burglary.
- If you have video cameras, please share images with the police.
- If the theft or burglary occurs in Henderson, North Las Vegas, or Boulder City, let them know that LVMPD patrol officers from the Enterprise Command are building a case against her.
Stay vigilant. We must all work together to help police catch these thieves.
