I Gave up my Controlled Substance Licensure in Nevada

November 4, 2024

I have not prescribed a controlled substance in Nevada for many years.

I have not prescribed a controlled substance in Nevada for many years. So recently, as my controlled substance licensure was due, I reached out to the Board of Pharmacy, and asked them if I do not intend to prescribe a controlled substance, do I need to keep a controlled substance license? Their answer was NO. Furthermore, without that license, the Prescription Monitoring Program account (PMP) is not necessary. Knowing this, I let my controlled substance license expire.

I then contacted the State Board of Optometry and asked if I do not have a controlled substance license, do I need to meet the opiate education requirement? Their answer was NO. So, as a result, without a Nevada controlled substance license, I am not required to take the Opiate course or monitor the PMP.

I value having Optometry represented with prescription writing, and this is done through the DEA licensure. If no controlled substances are written, the Nevada controlled substance licensure is not necessary.
